Walk in the pink sand of Elafonissi Beach with Platanias Taxi Tour Oparator, taxi and minibus services in Platanias, Chania, Crete! Elafonissi located in the southwestern most point of Crete. Elafonissi is an oblong, which often “breaks” in two parts by water giving the impression of being a separate island. Elafonissi is a Natura 2000 protected area. The island is full of dunes with sand lilies and jupiners (like-cedars trees). One of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

Elafonissi pink sand

Elafonissi pink sand

What characterizes the area of Elafonissos and makes it such an exotic place, are the little sand islets formed, the shallow turquoise waters of the sea, which at a point looks like a lagoon, and certainly the fine white sand, pinkish at several spots because of the crushed shell powder. Near the “breaking” point of the peninsula, the water does not exceed 1m, creating a small lagoon, ideal for children. The whole area is an endless summer playground for young and old alike.

The entire south side of the island has also a fantastic beach separated by scatters rocks. The only difference is that at this point there are no sun beds and umbrellas. Elafonissi means “deer island”, but you won’t see any deer on the island or in the surrounding area. Thousands of people visit Elafonissi each summer, reaching 2,500 daily in July and August, so if you want to enjoy the island it’s much better to come at the beginning or end of the summer or avoid the hours from 11 to 4, especially at weekends. There are a few rooms for rent and tavernas nearby.

Chrissoskalitissa Monastery

On the way you will see Chrissoskalitissa (or Chrysoskalitissa) Monastery, visible from afar as it is a dazzling white and built on a great rock.

Climb up to pay your respects at this historic monastery and look for the golden step which, according to legend, only the truly devout can see.

Elafonissi is 5 kilometres from Chrissoskalitissa. On arriving you will see a large bare expanse used as a car park, a few dusty juniper trees and the wonderful colours of the lagoon.

When driving in western Crete’s Kisamos County, on the road heading to Elafonissi (Deer Island) just after the village Topolia, you will go through a small tunnel. Exactly at the tunnel’s exit, high up on your right, you will see the opening of a cave and an unusual metallic star reflecting the sun’s rays. This is the entrance to an interesting cave named for Agia Sofia.

According to official findings the cave of Agia Sofia is at an elevation of 285 meters, and includes a cupola 20 meters high and 70 meters in diameter with variform stalactites (deposits which hang down from the ceiling of the cave) and stalagmites (deposits that project upward from the ground of the cave). Many ancient objects were discovered at this location, including shells from the Neolithic period.
