Complete guide to the gorge of Samaria

  • Close to the village of Omalos, Xyloskalo is located. This is the entrance to the National Forest of Samaria and you will see the ticket exchange there. The Samaria National Park has traditionally always opened to the public at the beginning of May. You have to pay an entrance fee of Euro 5.00 to enter the park (free to children under 15, half price to students). The tickets are held for control at the exit.
  • The walk through the National Park of Samaria is 13 km but you will have to walk the extra 3 km to Agia Roumeli from the exit of the National Park making it a total of 16 km.
  • Once you have walked through the gorge and are in Agia Roumeli you take a ferry boat returning to Hora Sfakion or to Paleochora.

In the gorge you will find unique plant and life species protected by international conventions.It is reported that there are 450 species of plants in the gorge and according to the law, nothing can be removed from the Samaria site, not even a flower. Inside the gorge you can meet its famous inhabitants, the chamois of Crete, what the locals call “wildlife” and tourists “kri – kri”.

Losing is rather impossible as you move anyway in a human stream. There are fountains in various places and toilets. Actually,the natural beauty of the place, the rivers you will encounter during the journey, and the final destination that combines mountain and sea will be an experience not to be missed.

This way you could reach Agia Roumeli in the evening, having enjoyed the gorge all to yourself. You could spend the night in Agia Roumeli and then have a wonderful day at the beach before you leave.
